CARLSBAD, Calif. (July 11, 2005) -- Happy birthday to TaylorMade-adidas Tour Staff professional Sean O'Hair who turns 23 today, a day after winning the John Deere Classic. O'Hair, a PGA Tour rookie, fired a final-round 65 to overcome a five-shot deficit and win by one. The victory, his first, came in just his 18th start on Tour; his best previous showing was a runner-up finish at this year's EDS Byron Nelson Championship.
In Sean's bag: TaylorMade r7 quad driver, TaylorMade V Steel 3-wood, TaylorMade rac LT irons, TaylorMade rac pitching, sand and lob wedges, and Rossa Monza Corza putter. He also wore adidas footwear and apparel.
Key to Sean's victory was his up-and-down to save par on the par-four 72nd hole. A wayward approach left him with an awkward chip, the ball well above his feet. With an 8-iron he got the ball onto the putting surface, leaving a ten-footer for par. Using a new model Rossa putter, the Monza Corza putter with AGSITM technology, he rolled the crucial putt home to maintain his one-shot edge.
AGSI is TaylorMade's new technology that employs 12 polymer-filled grooves in the face that help to promote forwardspin at impact instead of backspin, resulting in less skid and a smoother, more accurate roll in terms of direction and distance. Sergio Garcia, Ron Streck and Tim Petrovic have also won tournaments using AGSI to since the technology was introduced on tour last April.
A second crucial component to Sean's success was how well he struck the ball from tee to green throughout the week. Using a TaylorMade r7 quad driver he ranked No. 1 in total driving for the event by averaging more than 317 yards to rank No. 3 in driving distance, and hit 83.9% of his fairways to rank tied for No. 7 in driving accuracy. He also hit 82% of his greens in regulation to rank tied for No. 2 in that category.*
The win earned moved Sean up to 16th on the PGA Tour money list and earned him an invitation to this week's Open Championship, at St. Andrews. Though he professed during his post-victory press conference not to know whether he would accept the invitation and admitted he didn't have a passport, he reportedly called the Royal & Ancient Golf Club an hour later to tell them he was coming.
"We congratulate Sean on his first PGA Tour win," says Chuck Presto, vice president of global sports marketing for TaylorMade, "and we wish him luck at St. Andrews in what could turn out to be one of the great stories of the coming week."
